Kufi
الكوفي
The angular geometric script
Kufi (كوفي) is one of the earliest major styles of Arabic script, strongly associated with early Qur'anic manuscripts and monumental inscriptions. It represents a more constructed approach to writing, and it became foundational in the visual language of early Islamic art, especially where text needed to work as both reading and form.
Visual Character
Kufi is known for its angular structure, strong horizontal emphasis, and a geometric, architectural feel compared to cursive scripts like Naskh. Its stability made it well suited for stone, mosaic, and carved surfaces, where clear structure matters. Over time, Kufi developed into many variants, ranging from plain and readable forms to highly ornamental styles that merge writing with pattern and decoration.
