Loop (Ḥalqa)
الحَلقة
Closed circular forms within Arabic letters
A loop (حلقة, ḥalqa) is a fully closed circular or oval form found within certain Arabic letters. The most recognizable loop appears in م (mīm) and هـ (hāʾ) in their medial forms, where the stroke turns back on itself to create a complete enclosure. Loops differ from bowls in that they are typically rounder and fully closed.
Variation and Legibility
Loop size and shape vary dramatically across scripts. In Naskh, loops tend to be round and clearly open enough to read at small sizes. In Thuluth, loops are larger and more expressive. In Diwani, loops can become ornamental flourishes. At small text sizes, loops are a critical legibility test — if a loop closes too tightly or fills in, the letter becomes ambiguous. Type designers must balance the calligraphic beauty of a closed loop against the practical need for the interior space to remain visible.
